Fitness & Preparation

The Luxury Upper Mustang Jeep Tour is graded as easy, making it accessible to travelers of all ages and fitness levels. No trekking is required, as the entire journey is conducted in a private 4WD jeep with comfortable accommodations each night. Some short walks are involved when visiting monasteries, villages, and viewpoints, but these are optional and at a relaxed pace. The maximum altitude of 4,200m at Syangboche Pass is reached by vehicle, so proper acclimatization is built into the itinerary.

We recommend bringing comfortable clothing suitable for varying temperatures, as days can be warm and sunny while nights are cold at higher elevations. A good pair of walking shoes is sufficient for short explorations. No specialized trekking gear or extensive physical preparation is required, though staying hydrated and protecting yourself from the sun and wind at altitude is important.

A licensed guide is mandatory for this restricted area and is essential for navigating permits, sharing cultural insights, and ensuring your safety. The guide will monitor your well-being throughout the journey, especially at higher altitudes. Success on this tour depends on a spirit of adventure, openness to new cultures, and a willingness to embrace the dramatic landscapes of the trans-Himalayan desert.

Highlights of Fitness & Preparation

  • Easy grade suitable for all ages and fitness levels; no trekking required, only short walks for sightseeing.
  • Pack comfortable layers, warm clothing for cold nights, good walking shoes, sun protection, and a dust mask.
  • A licensed guide is mandatory and will handle all permits, provide cultural insights, and ensure your safety.

Additional Info

Permits and Regulations

Trekking in Upper Mustang requires special permits due to its status as a restricted area. These permits are arranged by us and are included in the cost.

1. Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit (RAP): The most significant permit, costing approximately USD 500 per person for the first 10 days, plus USD 50 per day for any additional days. Our 11-day itinerary is designed to fit within the 10-day permit period.

2. Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): Required for entering the Annapurna region, including the drive from Jomsom to Kagbeni. Cost: NPR 3,000.

3. Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) Card: A standard permit for all travelers in Nepal.

  • Solo travel is prohibited; you must be in a group of at least two with a licensed guide.
  • Bring 4-6 passport-sized photos and a copy of your passport for permit applications.
  • Permits are checked at Kagbeni and throughout major villages—keep them accessible.

Luxury Accommodation Standard

In Kathmandu and Pokhara, you will stay in handpicked 5-star luxury hotels offering world-class amenities, including spa services, fine dining, and exceptional service.

During the Mustang portion, accommodations are in the best available lodges and guesthouses. While facilities are more basic than city hotels, they are selected for cleanliness, comfort, and authentic hospitality. Rooms typically have private attached bathrooms, hot showers, and comfortable beds. In Lo Manthang, some guesthouses offer boutique-style accommodations with traditional decor and modern amenities.

  • A good sleeping bag is provided on loan for added comfort at higher elevations.
  • Most lodges have Wi-Fi, though connectivity may be limited in remote areas.
  • Power banks are recommended as backup, though charging is available in all accommodations.

Cuisine & Dining Experience

All meals during the Mustang portion are included and feature a variety of Nepali, Tibetan, and Western dishes. The staple is Dal Bhat (rice and lentil soup), which is nutritious and often served with unlimited refills. Local specialties include thukpa (noodle soup), momos (dumplings), Tibetan bread, and buckwheat pancakes.

Kagbeni and Jomsom are famous for their fresh apple pie and apple brandy, made from locally grown apples. Marpha village is renowned for its apple orchards and produces excellent apple cider and brandy. Your guide will recommend the best local specialties at each stop.

  • Vegetarian options are widely available; inform your guide of any dietary restrictions in advance.
  • Carry a reusable water bottle; safe drinking water is provided at all accommodations.
  • The farewell dinner in Kathmandu features authentic Nepali cuisine with cultural entertainment.

Packing List for Luxury Tour

Clothing: Layering is essential. Pack: thermal base layers, fleece jacket, down jacket (provided on loan), windproof jacket, comfortable trekking pants, t-shirts, sun hat, warm hat (beanie), gloves, buff or dust mask, and comfortable walking shoes.

Accessories: Sunglasses (UV protection), sunscreen (high SPF), lip balm, personal toiletries, hand sanitizer, wet wipes.

Gear: Small daypack for daily essentials, camera, power bank, universal adapter, water bottle.

Documents: Passport with at least 6 months validity, Nepal visa, travel insurance documents, passport photos (4-6), and photocopies of important documents.

  • Pack light! The jeep has ample space, but lighter luggage is easier to manage.
  • Use a small daypack for daily essentials like water, camera, and extra layers.
  • Keep valuables (passport, cash, camera) with you at all times.

Weather & Best Time to Tour

Spring (March to May): Excellent time with moderate daytime temperatures (10-20°C at lower elevations) and the famous Tiji Festival in Lo Manthang (usually mid-May). Nights are cool. Skies are generally clear.

Autumn (September to November): The most popular season with crystal-clear skies, stable weather, and spectacular mountain views. Daytime temperatures are pleasant, but nights are cold. Ideal for photography.

Monsoon (June to August): Upper Mustang is in a rain shadow, so it receives very little rainfall. This makes touring possible during the summer, though it can be windy and dusty. Clouds may obscure mountain views.

Winter (December to February): Very cold with heavy snow possible, making passes potentially blocked. Not recommended for most travelers.

  • Layering is key to comfort, allowing adaptation to changing temperatures throughout the day.
  • Be prepared for strong afternoon winds, especially on exposed passes and open valleys.

Cultural Etiquette

When visiting monasteries and villages, respect local customs: remove shoes before entering temples, ask permission before photographing people, and dress modestly (covering shoulders and knees). Always walk clockwise around Buddhist monuments, chortens, and mani walls.

The Loba people are deeply spiritual and take pride in their traditions. Show respect by keeping voices low in monasteries and not touching religious artifacts. Your guide will provide detailed cultural briefings at each site.

  • Learn a few Nepali and Tibetan words: Namaste (hello), Dhanyabad (thank you), Tashi Delek (Tibetan greeting).
  • Small gifts for children (pencils, notebooks, educational items) are appreciated.
  • Drones are heavily restricted around monasteries and settlements—seek permission first.
