High-Altitude Trekking & Cultural Tour

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is widely regarded as one of the finest treks in the Himalayas. Encircling Mount Manaslu (8,163m), the eighth highest mountain in the world, this trail offers a perfect blend of pristine natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and high-adventure trekking. Unlike the more frequented routes in the Everest and Annapurna regions, Manaslu provides a more remote and tranquil experience, having only been opened to trekkers in 1991 .

The journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to the trailhead at Machha Khola, following the roaring Budi Gandaki River upstream. The trail winds through a dramatic gorge, crossing countless suspension bridges and passing through terraced farmlands and traditional villages. As you gain altitude, the landscape transforms from lush subtropical forests of rhododendron and bamboo to alpine meadows and the barren, high-altitude terrain surrounding the Larkya La Pass (5,106m) .

Culturally, the trek is fascinating. The lower regions are inhabited by Gurung and Magar communities, while the upper reaches, particularly villages like Namrung, Lho, Samagaon, and Samdo, are heavily influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. You'll encounter ancient monasteries, mani walls, chortens, and prayer flags fluttering in the wind, offering a profound sense of place and spirituality. This 15-day itinerary is carefully designed to include crucial acclimatization days, ensuring a safe and successful crossing of the Larkya La, the trek's exhilarating climax .

Highlights of This Trek

  • Trek around the world's 8th highest peak, Mt. Manaslu (8,163m), experiencing its grandeur from all sides .
  • Conquer the spectacular Larkya La Pass (5,106m), one of Nepal's most challenging and rewarding high mountain passes, with panoramic views of the Himalaya .
  • Immerse yourself in authentic Tibetan Buddhist culture in villages like Samagaon and Samdo, visiting ancient monasteries such as Ribung Gompa and Pungyen Gompa .
  • Trek through a stunning diversity of landscapes, from subtropical forests and deep gorges to alpine meadows and glacial moraines .
  • Experience a remote and less-crowded trekking route, offering a true sense of wilderness and adventure in a pristine Himalayan environment .
  • Enjoy unparalleled mountain views, including Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, Annapurna II, and Ganesh Himal, alongside the dominant Mt. Manaslu .

Why Choose the 15-Day Manaslu Circuit Trek?

The Manaslu Circuit is the quintessential choice for experienced trekkers seeking a genuine wilderness adventure. Its remote location and restricted area status have preserved its natural beauty and cultural authenticity, offering a stark contrast to the more commercialized trekking hubs. The sense of solitude and discovery as you traverse this ancient salt-trading route is unparalleled .

The 15-day duration is perfectly calibrated for this challenging circuit. It allows for a safe and steady ascent, incorporating essential acclimatization stops, particularly in Samagaon, which is vital for preparing for the demanding Larkya La Pass. The itinerary provides a deep dive into the region's biodiversity, which includes 33 species of mammals, 110 bird species, and over 2,000 plant varieties, offering the possibility of spotting elusive wildlife like the Himalayan Thar or even the Red Panda .

Crossing the Larkya La is the undeniable highlight. The sense of achievement upon reaching the top, surrounded by a 360-degree panorama of snow-capped giants like Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, and Annapurna II, is a memory that will last a lifetime. This trek is not just a physical challenge; it's a profound journey through some of the most spectacular and sacred landscapes on Earth .

Highlights of Why Choose the 15-Day Manaslu Circuit Trek?

  • Trek a remote and unspoiled circuit in a restricted area, ensuring a quieter and more authentic experience .
  • A well-paced 15-day itinerary with built-in acclimatization for a safe and successful high-pass crossing .
  • Deep cultural immersion in Tibetan Buddhist villages with opportunities to explore ancient monasteries .
  • An exhilarating challenge for experienced trekkers, culminating in the breathtaking Larkya La Pass .

Fitness & Preparation

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is graded as strenuous and is designed for experienced trekkers with a high level of physical fitness. You will be trekking for 6 to 8 hours daily over a total distance of approximately 177 km. The terrain is challenging, featuring steep ascents and descents, rocky paths, and the high-altitude crossing of the Larkya La Pass (5,106m), where the air is thin and the weather can be extreme .

Rigorous preparation is essential for a successful and enjoyable trek. At least 2-3 months before your trip, you should engage in a consistent training program. This should include long-distance walking or hiking on varied terrain with a weighted pack, cardiovascular exercises like running, cycling, or swimming, and strength training focusing on your legs and core. Prior experience trekking at altitudes above 4,000m is highly beneficial.

Your safety is our utmost priority. Our experienced, licensed guides are trained in high-altitude first aid and will monitor your health daily using a pulse oximeter. They will set a safe, steady pace ('bistari, bistari') and ensure proper acclimatization. Success on this trek depends on listening to your body, communicating openly with your guide, and being prepared for the physical and mental demands of a high Himalayan circuit .

Highlights of Fitness & Preparation

  • Undertake a rigorous training regimen for 2-3 months prior, including long hikes and cardiovascular exercise.
  • Prior high-altitude trekking experience is strongly recommended to understand the challenges and your body's response.
  • Pack high-quality, four-season gear, including a sleeping bag rated for temperatures down to -15°C or lower .

Today the trail continues to follow the river, but the valley narrows, and the terrain becomes more rugged. We pass through Sirdibas and Phillim, another permit checkpoint, and cross more spectacular suspension bridges. The cultural influence begins to shift as we encounter more chortens and mani walls. After crossing the Siyar Khola bridge, we make our way to the small settlement of Deng, nestled in a forested area, where we stay overnight .

Additional Info

Accommodation Standard

In Kathmandu, you will stay in a comfortable 3-star hotel in the Thamel district on a twin-sharing basis with breakfast included.

During the trek, accommodation is in local teahouses or lodges. These are basic but provide a warm bed and shelter. Rooms are typically twin-sharing with a mattress, pillow, and blanket. At higher elevations like Dharamsala (Larkya Phedi), the accommodation is very basic with minimal facilities. Bathroom facilities are generally shared, and hot showers (often solar-powered) are available for a small fee (Rs. 100-300) at most teahouses, though reliability decreases at higher altitudes. Communal dining rooms with a wood-burning stove are the heart of each teahouse, where you can socialize and enjoy meals.

  • A high-quality sleeping bag rated for sub-zero temperatures (at least -15°C) is essential for comfort.
  • Earplugs can be helpful for a good night's sleep in shared accommodations.
  • Power banks are crucial, as charging facilities are limited and often come with a fee.

Meals on the Trek

All main meals (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner) are included during the trek. You'll order from the teahouse menu, which offers a surprising variety. Common meals include porridge, eggs, and Tibetan bread for breakfast; and noodle soups, momos (dumplings), pasta, and potatoes for lunch and dinner. The ubiquitous Dal Bhat (rice and lentil soup) is the ultimate trekker's meal—providing sustained energy, essential carbohydrates, and is often served with unlimited refills.

At higher elevations, the menu becomes more limited but will always include warm, hearty options like Dal Bhat and noodle soups. We recommend bringing some of your own high-energy snacks (protein bars, chocolate, nuts) for quick energy on the trail, as these can be expensive or unavailable in the mountains.

  • Stick to warm, cooked meals and avoid uncooked salads to minimize the risk of stomach upsets.
  • Carry water purification tablets or a SteriPen to treat tap water, which is more economical and eco-friendly than buying bottled water.
  • Tea, coffee, and hot lemon are widely available and great for staying warm and hydrated.

Permits Required

We arrange all necessary permits for you, which are included in the cost:

1. Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP): Required as this is a restricted area. The cost varies by season (approx. $75-$100 for the first 7 days, then $10 per day thereafter).

2. Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP): Required to enter the Manaslu Conservation Area. Cost: approx. $30.

3. Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): Required as the trek ends in the Annapurna region. Cost: approx. $30.

  • Please bring 3-4 passport-sized photos and a copy of your passport for permit applications.
  • Solo trekking is not permitted; you must be in a group of at least two with a licensed guide.

Packing List (Essentials)

Clothing: Layering is critical. Pack: thermal base layers (merino wool recommended), trekking shirts (synthetic), a fleece jacket or light insulated mid-layer, a high-quality down jacket (provided on loan), a waterproof and windproof hardshell jacket and pants, trekking pants (convertible are useful), a warm hat (beanie), a sun hat or cap, lightweight and heavy-duty gloves, and multiple pairs of trekking socks.

Footwear: Well-broken-in, sturdy waterproof trekking boots with excellent ankle support are non-negotiable. Lightweight camp shoes or sandals are a luxury for evenings.

Gear: 50-65L duffel bag (for porter), 20-30L daypack, four-season sleeping bag (rated to -15°C or lower, provided on loan), trekking poles, headlamp with extra batteries, UV-protected sunglasses (category 4 recommended), water bottles/hydration bladder (2-3L capacity), water purification tablets or filter.

Toiletries & Health: Sunscreen (high SPF), lip balm with SPF, hand sanitizer, biodegradable wet wipes, personal first-aid kit (including blister care, pain relievers, Diamox for altitude, and any personal medication).

Extras: High-capacity power bank (20,000mAh+), camera, universal adapter, quick-dry travel towel, and a good book or journal for evenings.

  • Pack light! Your main duffel bag for the porter should not exceed 10-12 kg.
  • Use dry bags or heavy-duty zip-lock bags to keep gear organized and dry.
  • Carry your valuables (passport, cash, camera) in your daypack at all times.

Weather & Best Time to Trek

Spring (March to May): A great time with moderate temperatures and blooming rhododendrons in the lower regions. The weather is generally stable, making it a popular time for the trek.

Autumn (September to November): The most popular season, offering crystal-clear skies, stable weather, and excellent visibility. This is the best time for crossing the high Larkya La Pass.

Winter (December to February): Extremely cold with heavy snowfall that can block the Larkya La Pass. This trek is not recommended during winter for all but the most experienced and well-equipped winter trekkers.

Monsoon (June to August): Not recommended due to heavy rainfall, leeches, increased risk of landslides, and poor visibility which obscures mountain views.

  • Layering is the key to comfort, allowing you to adapt to changing temperatures and conditions at different altitudes.
  • Always be prepared for sudden weather changes, including snow, even in peak seasons, at high altitudes like the Larkya La.

Health & Wellness Tips

Acclimatization is Key: The success of this trek depends on it. Walk slowly ('bistari, bistari'), ascend gradually, and drink plenty of fluids. Our acclimatization day in Samagaun is crucial.

Hydration: Drink 3-4 liters of water or warm fluids per day. Proper hydration is the single most effective way to combat AMS symptoms.

Nutrition: Eat well, focusing on carbohydrates like Dal Bhat for sustained energy. Don't skip meals, even if your appetite is low at altitude.

Communication: Be completely honest with your guide about how you're feeling. Any sign of headache, nausea, or dizziness must be reported immediately.

Hygiene: Use hand sanitizer religiously, especially before meals, to prevent gastrointestinal issues.

  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco completely during the trek.
  • Listen to your body – it is the most important indicator of your well-being at high altitude.
