Cultural Trekking & Monastery Tour

The Upper Mustang Trek is a rare and remarkable journey into a preserved Tibetan Buddhist kingdom that was closed to foreigners until 1992. Nestled in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, this region is a high-altitude desert of extraordinary beauty, featuring dramatic red-rock canyons, ochre cliffs, ancient cave dwellings, and the legendary walled city of Lo Manthang, the former capital of the Kingdom of Lo. This is not just a trek; it is a cultural odyssey into a land where time seems to stand still.

The journey begins with a scenic drive to Pokhara followed by a breathtaking mountain flight to Jomsom, landing in the world's deepest gorge, the Kali Gandaki. From here, the trail heads north, leaving the more frequented routes behind. The landscape transforms as you cross into the restricted area at Kagbeni, with vegetation giving way to an arid expanse of sculpted rock formations, whitewashed villages, and fields of barley and buckwheat. The air is filled with the flutter of prayer flags, and the trail is lined with ancient chortens and mani walls, each stone carved with sacred prayers.

The trek's cultural and spiritual heart is Lo Manthang, a 15th-century walled city where the King of Mustang still resides. Here, you will spend a full day exploring its ancient monasteries, including Jampa Lhakhang and Thubchen Gompa, adorned with exquisite murals. A side trip to the sky caves of Chhoser and the oldest monastery in the region, Ghar Gompa (Lo Gekar), reveals a history stretching back over a thousand years. This 17-day itinerary includes the challenging yet rewarding crossing of passes and ample time for deep cultural immersion, offering a profound experience of one of the world's most unique and unspoiled Himalayan cultures.

Highlights of This Trek

  • Explore the walled city of Lo Manthang (3,810m), the former capital of the Kingdom of Lo, and visit the King's Palace.
  • Discover ancient Buddhist monasteries like Jampa Gompa, Thubchen Gompa, and Ghar Gompa (Lo Gekar), one of Nepal's oldest.
  • Witness the mysterious sky caves of Chhoser, carved into sheer cliffs, used for meditation and burial for centuries.
  • Trek through a spectacular high-altitude desert landscape of red cliffs, deep gorges, and eroded canyons, shaped by wind and time.
  • Experience living Tibetan Buddhist culture in remote villages where traditions remain untouched by modernization.
  • Enjoy panoramic mountain views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Nilgiri, and Tilicho Peak from unique vantage points.

Why Choose the 17-Day Upper Mustang Trek?

The Upper Mustang Trek offers a completely different experience from Nepal's other famous treks. Instead of lush green hills and dense forests, you are transported to a starkly beautiful trans-Himalayan plateau, a land of immense open skies, vibrant geological formations, and a deeply preserved culture that feels more Tibetan than Nepali. Its status as a restricted area means the trails are uncrowded, offering a sense of solitude and discovery that is increasingly rare.

The 17-day duration is ideal for this circuit, providing a well-paced journey that allows for proper acclimatization and deep cultural immersion. The extra days, including a full exploration day in Lo Manthang and side trips to Chhoser and Ghar Gompa, ensure you don't just pass through but truly experience the region's highlights. The return via a different route through villages like Dhakmar and Geling offers fresh perspectives and a complete loop of this ancient kingdom.

What makes this trek truly unique is its living history. Walking the same paths as ancient salt traders, visiting monasteries where monks have prayed for centuries, and seeing the walled city of Lo Manthang unchanged since the 15th century is an experience that transcends trekking. It is a journey into the heart of Tibetan Buddhist culture, a rare privilege in a rapidly changing world. This is the ultimate adventure for those seeking cultural depth alongside dramatic landscapes.

Highlights of Why Choose the 17-Day Upper Mustang Trek?

  • Experience a restricted, off-the-beaten-path region with uncrowded trails and authentic cultural encounters.
  • Well-paced 17-day itinerary with a full exploration day in Lo Manthang and side trips to key historical sites.
  • Witness a living Tibetan Buddhist kingdom, with ancient traditions and a way of life preserved for centuries.
  • Trek through a unique high-altitude desert landscape, a dramatic contrast to Nepal's typical green trails.

Fitness & Preparation

The Upper Mustang Trek is graded as moderate, making it suitable for trekkers with good fitness and some prior trekking experience. You will trek 5-7 hours daily on well-defined but often dry, dusty, and windy trails. The terrain includes some steep climbs and descents, particularly when crossing passes. The highest point is around 4,200m, so proper acclimatization is important, though the risk of altitude sickness is lower than in treks like Everest Base Camp.

We recommend a consistent training regimen for 8-12 weeks before your trek, focusing on cardiovascular exercises (hiking, jogging, cycling) and leg strength training. Practicing on varied terrain with a loaded daypack will best simulate trekking conditions. As the region is dry and dusty, being prepared for this environment will enhance your comfort.

A licensed guide is mandatory for this restricted area and is essential for navigating the trail, handling permits, and providing deep cultural insights. Porters will carry your main luggage, allowing you to trek with just a daypack. Success on this trek depends on a positive attitude, openness to a different culture, and trusting your local support team. The rewards—unforgettable landscapes and profound cultural experiences—are immense.

Highlights of Fitness & Preparation

  • Good fitness with regular cardio and leg strength training for 8-12 weeks is recommended.
  • Pack for dry, dusty, and windy conditions with quality layers, a windproof jacket, and a good dust mask or buff.
  • A licensed guide is mandatory in this restricted area, ensuring your safety and enriching your cultural experience.

Additional Info

Permits and Regulations

Trekking in Upper Mustang requires special permits due to its status as a restricted area. These permits are arranged by us and are included in the cost.

1. Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit (RAP): The most significant permit, costing USD 500 per person for the first 10 days, plus USD 50 per day for any additional days. Our 17-day itinerary is designed to fit within the 10-day permit period.

2. Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): Required for entering the Annapurna region, including the trek from Jomsom to Kagbeni. Cost: NPR 3,000.

3. Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) Card: A standard permit for all trekkers in Nepal.

  • Solo trekking is prohibited; you must be in a group of at least two with a licensed guide.
  • Bring 4-6 passport-sized photos and a copy of your passport for permit applications.
  • Carry cash in Nepali rupees for ACAP and TIMS fees, though they are included in our package cost.

Accommodation Standard

In Kathmandu and Pokhara, you will stay in comfortable 3-star hotels with breakfast included.

During the trek, accommodation is in basic but welcoming teahouses and lodges. Rooms are typically twin-sharing with a simple bed, mattress, pillow, and blanket. Bathroom facilities are shared. Hot showers are often available for a small fee (NPR 200-500), but solar power can be inconsistent. The family-run teahouses provide a warm, communal atmosphere and a chance to connect with other trekkers and locals. In Lo Manthang, some guesthouses may offer rooms with attached bathrooms.

  • A good sleeping bag rated to -10°C is essential for warmth, especially at night.
  • Earplugs can be helpful for a good night's sleep in shared accommodations.
  • High-capacity power banks are crucial, as charging is often limited and fee-based.

Meals on the Trek

All main meals (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner) are included during the trek. You'll order from the teahouse menu, which offers a variety of local and international dishes.

The staple is Dal Bhat (rice and lentil soup), which is nutritious, filling, and often served with unlimited refills, making it the ultimate trekker's fuel. Tibetan dishes like thukpa (noodle soup) and momos (dumplings) are also common. Breakfast options include porridge, eggs, Tibetan bread, and pancakes.

Kagbeni is famous for its apple pie, a delicious treat from local orchards. It's wise to carry some high-energy snacks like chocolate, nuts, and energy bars, as these can be expensive in the mountains.

  • Stick to warm, cooked meals and avoid uncooked salads to minimize the risk of stomach upsets.
  • Carry water purification tablets or a SteriPen to treat tap water, reducing plastic bottle usage.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking 3-4 liters of water or tea daily, especially important in the dry climate.

Packing List (Essentials)

Clothing: Layering is essential. Pack: thermal base layers (merino wool recommended), trekking shirts, a fleece jacket, a high-quality down jacket (provided on loan), a windproof and waterproof hardshell jacket, trekking pants, a warm hat (beanie), a sun hat, a buff or dust mask (essential), lightweight and heavy-duty gloves, and multiple pairs of trekking socks.

Footwear: Well-broken-in, sturdy waterproof trekking boots with good ankle support are essential. Lightweight camp shoes or sandals for evenings.

Gear: 40-50L duffel bag (for porter), 20-30L daypack, sleeping bag (rated to -10°C or lower, provided on loan), trekking poles, headlamp with extra batteries, UV-protected sunglasses (category 4 recommended), water bottles/hydration bladder (2L capacity), water purification tablets.

Toiletries & Health: Sunscreen (high SPF), lip balm with SPF, hand sanitizer, biodegradable wet wipes, personal first-aid kit (including blister care, pain relievers, Diamox for altitude, and any personal medication).

Extras: High-capacity power bank (20,000mAh+), camera, universal adapter, quick-dry travel towel, a good book for evenings, and cash in Nepali rupees.

  • Pack light! Your main duffel bag for the porter should not exceed 10-12 kg.
  • Use dry bags or heavy-duty zip-lock bags to keep gear organized and protected from dust.
  • Carry your valuables (passport, cash, camera) in your daypack at all times.

Weather & Best Time to Trek

Spring (March to May): Excellent time with moderate daytime temperatures (10-20°C at lower elevations) and the famous Tiji Festival in Lo Manthang (usually mid-May). Nights are cool. Skies are generally clear, making it ideal.

Autumn (September to November): The most popular season with crystal-clear skies, stable weather, and spectacular mountain views. Daytime temperatures are pleasant, but nights are cold. This is the best time for photography.

Monsoon (June to August): Upper Mustang is in a rain shadow, so it receives very little rainfall. This makes trekking possible during the summer, though it can be windy and dusty. Clouds may obscure mountain views.

Winter (December to February): Very cold with heavy snow possible, making trekking difficult and passes potentially blocked. Not recommended for most trekkers.

  • Layering is key to comfort, allowing adaptation to changing temperatures throughout the day.
  • Be prepared for strong afternoon winds, especially on exposed ridges and passes.

Health & Wellness Tips

Acclimatization: Ascend gradually and listen to your guide's advice. Stay hydrated and avoid overexertion.

Hydration: Drink 3-4 liters of water or warm fluids per day. The dry air can dehydrate you quickly.

Nutrition: Eat well, focusing on carbohydrates like Dal Bhat for sustained energy. Don't skip meals.

Communication: Be completely honest with your guide about any symptoms. They are trained to help you have a safe journey.

Hygiene: Use hand sanitizer before meals to prevent gastrointestinal issues.

  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco during the trek.
  • Listen to your body – it is the most important indicator of your well-being at high altitude.
