Trekking & Cultural Tour

The Mardi Himal Trek is one of the Annapurna region's best-kept secrets, offering a short but spectacular adventure to the base of Mardi Himal (5,587m) and the sacred Machhapuchhre (Fishtail). Unlike the crowded trails of Annapurna Base Camp or Poon Hill, this trek provides a sense of solitude and pristine wilderness while still delivering world-class mountain views.

The trek follows a stunning ridge line, meaning you're not just looking up at mountains from a valley floor – you're walking on a spine with panoramic views in every direction. From the lush rhododendron and oak forests of the lower trails to the alpine landscapes above the treeline, every day brings new perspectives of peaks like Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and the iconic Machhapuchhre.

Opened to trekkers in 2012, the trail has developed a network of cozy teahouses while retaining its off-the-beaten-path charm. The 9-day itinerary provides ample time for acclimatization and exploration, culminating in an early morning hike to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m) for an unforgettable sunrise over the Himalayas.

Highlights of This Trek

  • Experience the unique ridge-line trekking perspective, with 360° mountain views throughout the journey.
  • Stand at Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m) with close-up views of Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli.
  • Trek through pristine rhododendron and oak forests, home to diverse wildlife including the Himalayan Monal (Danphe), Nepal's national bird.
  • Experience authentic Gurung and Magar village culture in traditional settlements along the route.
  • Enjoy a less-crowded alternative to the classic Annapurna treks while still accessing spectacular high-altitude scenery.
  • Relax in the beautiful lakeside city of Pokhara before and after your trek, with optional adventure activities available.

Why Choose the 9-Day Mardi Himal Trek?

The Mardi Himal Trek is perfect for trekkers who want a complete Himalayan experience but have limited time. In just 9 days from Kathmandu, you'll experience everything that makes trekking in Nepal special: diverse landscapes, rich culture, and unforgettable mountain views.

What sets this trek apart is its unique ridge-line route. While most treks follow river valleys where you're looking up at peaks through the trees, the Mardi Himal trail puts you on the spine of a ridge. From High Camp onward, the world drops away on both sides – to your left, the massive Annapurna South; to your right, the Mardi Khola valley; and directly ahead, the sacred pyramid of Machhapuchhre.

This trek is also an excellent choice for those seeking solitude. While it has gained popularity in recent years, it remains significantly less crowded than Annapurna Base Camp or the Everest region, allowing for a more intimate connection with the mountains and a peaceful trekking experience.

Highlights of Why Choose the 9-Day Mardi Himal Trek?

  • Short and manageable itinerary ideal for those with limited vacation time.
  • Unique ridge-line perspective offering unparalleled mountain views throughout the trek.
  • Less crowded trails providing a more authentic and peaceful Himalayan experience.
  • Moderate difficulty makes it accessible to beginners with good fitness and experienced trekkers alike.

Fitness & Preparation

The Mardi Himal Trek is graded as moderate. You'll trek for 4-7 hours daily on well-defined trails that include stone steps, forest paths, and some steep sections, particularly on the ridge approach to High Camp and Base Camp. The maximum altitude of 4,500m is lower than many other popular treks, reducing but not eliminating the risk of altitude-related issues.

A good level of cardiovascular fitness will significantly enhance your enjoyment. We recommend a training routine of regular walking, hiking on varied terrain, stair climbing, and cardio exercises like jogging or cycling for 4-6 weeks before your trek. You don't need technical climbing experience, but being comfortable with several hours of daily walking is essential.

Your guide will help maintain a steady pace and monitor your acclimatization throughout the journey. The key to success is listening to your body, staying well-hydrated, and communicating openly with your guide about how you're feeling.

Highlights of Fitness & Preparation

  • Build endurance with regular walking, hiking, and stair climbing for 4-6 weeks before your trek.
  • Pack layers: warm clothing for cool mornings and evenings at higher altitudes, lighter gear for daytime trekking.
  • Follow your guide's pacing advice, stay hydrated, and enjoy the journey at your own comfortable speed.

Additional Info

Accommodation Standard

In Kathmandu and Pokhara, you will stay in comfortable 3-star hotels on a twin-sharing basis with breakfast included. Our partner hotels are centrally located, allowing easy access to restaurants and shops.

During the trek, accommodation is in local teahouses. Rooms are basic but clean, typically twin-sharing with a bed and pillow. At Forest Camp, Low Camp, and High Camp, facilities are simple with shared bathrooms. Hot showers are available for a small fee (Rs. 100-300) at most teahouses, though they may be solar-powered and less reliable at higher altitudes. Most teahouses have communal dining rooms with heaters, where you can socialize with other trekkers and enjoy meals.

Please note that teahouses at higher elevations (High Camp and Base Camp) have more limited facilities – don't expect hot showers or reliable electricity. A good sleeping bag is essential for comfort.

  • A sleeping bag liner adds extra warmth and hygiene.
  • Earplugs can be helpful for a good night's sleep in shared accommodations.
  • Power banks are essential as charging facilities are limited at higher camps.

Meals on the Trek

All meals (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner) are included during the trek. You'll order from the teahouse menu, providing good variety each day. A typical breakfast might include porridge, muesli, eggs, toast, Tibetan bread, and pancakes. Lunch and dinner offer a range of options from traditional Nepali Dal Bhat (rice, lentil soup, and vegetables) to noodles, soups, pasta, potatoes, and momos.

Dal Bhat is highly recommended by guides as it provides sustained energy, is easily digestible, and is often served with unlimited refills, making it great fuel for trekking. At higher camps, the menu becomes more limited, but there will always be hearty, warm options available.

We recommend bringing some of your favorite high-energy snacks (energy bars, chocolate, nuts) as options at teahouses are limited and may not suit all tastes.

  • Stick to warm, cooked meals and avoid raw salads to minimize the risk of stomach upsets.
  • Tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and lemon tea are widely available and great for warming up.
  • Carry water purification tablets or a SteriPen to treat tap water, reducing plastic bottle usage.

Permits Required

We arrange all necessary permits for you, which are included in the cost:

1. Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): Required to enter the Annapurna Conservation Area. Cost: NPR 3,000 (approx. $23 USD).

2. Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) Card: Required for all trekkers in Nepal. Cost: NPR 2,000 (approx. $15 USD).

  • Please bring 2-3 passport-sized photos and a copy of your passport for permit applications.

Packing List (Essentials)

Clothing: Layering is essential. Bring: thermal base layers (merino wool/synthetic), trekking shirts, fleece jacket or light mid-layer, down jacket (provided, but you can bring your own), waterproof and windproof hardshell jacket and pants, trekking pants, warm hat, sun hat, gloves (light and warm), and plenty of trekking socks.

Footwear: Well-broken-in waterproof trekking boots with good ankle support. Comfortable camp shoes or sandals for evenings at teahouses.

Gear: 40-50L duffel bag (for porter), 20-30L daypack, sleeping bag (rated to -10°C or lower, provided on loan), trekking poles, headlamp with extra batteries, UV-protected sunglasses, water bottles/hydration bladder (2L capacity), water purification tablets.

Toiletries & Health: Sunscreen (high SPF), lip balm with SPF, hand sanitizer, wet wipes, personal first-aid kit (including blister care, pain relievers, Diamox, and any personal medication).

Extras: Power bank, camera, universal adapter, quick-dry towel, and a good book for evenings.

  • Pack light! Your main duffel bag for the porter should not exceed 10-11 kg.
  • Use dry bags or packing cubes to keep gear organized and dry.
  • Carry your valuables (passport, cash, camera) in your daypack at all times.

Weather & Best Time to Trek

Spring (March to May): Excellent time with moderate temperatures, longer days, and blooming rhododendron forests. Daytime temperatures at lower elevations: 15-20°C; at Base Camp: 5-10°C during day, dropping below freezing at night.

Autumn (September to November): The best time for trekking. Stable weather, crystal-clear skies, and spectacular mountain views. Daytime temperatures similar to spring, with cooler nights.

Winter (December to February): Possible for well-prepared trekkers with proper cold-weather gear. Trails are very quiet, but it's cold at higher altitudes (Base Camp night temperatures can drop to -10°C or lower). Snow may occasionally close the upper trail.

Monsoon (June to August): Not recommended. Heavy rain, leeches on lower trails, cloud cover obscuring views, and increased risk of landslides make the trek difficult and potentially dangerous.

  • Layering is the key to comfort regardless of the season.
  • Always be prepared for sudden weather changes, especially at higher altitudes.

Health & Wellness Tips

Pacing: Walk slowly and steadily. The mantra 'bistari, bistari' (slowly, slowly) applies to all Himalayan treks. Enjoy the journey, don't rush.

Hydration: Drink at least 3-4 liters of water or warm fluids per day. Proper hydration is the most effective way to combat AMS symptoms.

Nutrition: Eat well, even if you don't have a big appetite. Carbohydrates are your best fuel. Dal Bhat is your friend!

Acclimatization: Our itinerary is designed with gradual ascent. Take the recommended pace seriously, especially on the final approach to Base Camp.

Communication: Be honest with your guide about how you're feeling. They're there to help you have a safe and enjoyable experience.

Hygiene: Wash hands frequently with soap or sanitizer, especially before meals, to prevent stomach issues.

  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco at high altitude.
  • Listen to your body – if you feel unwell, tell your guide immediately.
